I know my response is somewhat vague, and you probably want a precise number, but I don't think you can really put a number on it. If you're still in the early/mid game, a few points in either tool use or arcane lore is just fine in my opinion, but I don't really care about opening every single door, etc. Keep in mind that the maximum number for many of the skills (to include tool use and arcane lore) is 10, NOT including item enchantments and other bonuses that I can't think of off the top of my head. I think I'm fairly close to the end of the game and I don't feel like I've missed out on too much due to me not prioritizing tool use and arcane lore. I focused on leveling up combat skills whenever I could (such as pole weapons, missile weapons, blademaster, priest spells, mage spells, spellcraft) and, after every few levels, picked up a point in tool use or arcane lore for the relevant character. It really depends on whether you want to open as many locked doors/containers as possible, on whether you want to read as many spell tomes as possible (which are found in dungeons, and can give you access to cool spells or improve on spells you already know), or if you just want to be the most efficient in combat as possible.įor me, I didn't prioritize tool use and arcane lore. Depending on the difficulty level you're playing on, you can decide whether to just form characters as you please, with a focus on role-playing, or you may need to focus more on optimal min-maxing. The above is from my own experience on Torment difficulty. If you really must "splash" skills, a mage-priest isn't that bad of an idea, as at least mages and priests share some areas on their skill trees (Spellcraft, for example). I would advise against "splashing" overall in fact, for a party of 4, I believe that an optimal configuration would be a "pure" melee dps/tank, a "pure" missile character with a focus on tool use, a "pure" mage, and a "pure" priest. As you level up, you will have limited skill points to distribute, and I don't think it's a good idea to invest skill points into two entirely separate trees - you will find yourself "short" on skill allocation, if that makes sense.
